Chester M. Smith papers, 1848-1925.

This collection consists of two donations of materials documenting the life of Chester M. Smith. These donations have not been consolidated and each constitute a self-contained series of the collection. Both series include deeds, account books, and correspondence, including letters to Chester Smith's first wife, Sarah M. Smith, prior to their marriage. Series I includes mortgage, warranty, and quitclaim deeds of Chester M. Smith and his son, Jacob, dating from 1858-1911, as well as account books and a detailed Smith family genealogy. The account books in Series I document the daily operation of the farm from the 1840s to the 1880s, with expenditures, income and other activity listed. Also included in Series I are photocopies of ten letters, 1848-1851, written by Chester Smith to his first wife, Sarah Smith; most of these letters were written prior to their marriage on 2 December 1850. Other miscellaneous items, including letters, mostly with family members, and photographs are also included. Series II contains a greater volume of correspondence and financial information. Letters with family members including both Chester Smith's first wife, Sarah, and second wife, Mary Ann (Jackman) Swan are included. Letters from the families of both Chester and Jacob Smith's wives constitute a sizable portion of the other correspondence in the collection. Family members represented in this correspondence include Asher Smith (Sarah F. Smith's father), Lewis and Ellen Jackman, and Royal A. Swan. Series II also includes financial information, promissory notes, and account books, documenting the finances and activity of the farm from 1849-1906. Additionally, material on estate settlements of both Chester Smith, his son, Jacob, and Mabel Smith (granddaughter of Chester Smith) as well as an 1850 diary of an unknown woman, an 1863 almanac, a 1925 church confirmation of one of Chester Smith's granddaughters, and a collection of calling and business cards are located in Series II.
